In a time when distance was measured by danger, and words were a luxury the war could not afford, Zahraa remained faithful. Weeks would pass without hearing his voice, and the only thread connecting them were shy attempts at communication—often cut short by the explosive security situation. But she never gave up.
At a pivotal moment, she decided to see him, even if it cost her life.
She accompanied her husband on one of his missions—with no phone, no way to stay in touch—fully aware that every step beside him was a risk. But she didn’t think of fear. She felt that walking this path with him, even for just one day, was part of the struggle, the journey, the certainty.
And when seeing him became impossible, handwritten letters became a bridge between two hearts. A letter might take two days to arrive—sometimes more—but it pulsed with a whole life. She wrote to him as if planting her words by candlelight, and waited for his reply as if waiting for a long-delayed dawn.
Their final phone call came at the height of the war, during displacement. His voice was different... there was a farewell in his tone.
He kept telling her, “Take care of yourself… take care of the kids.” He repeated it three times, maybe more. The last time, his voice was soft—filled with a kind of fear for her, not for himself.
But she didn’t let the tears betray him. She was stronger than the moment allowed.
She held her heart firm, reassured him, and said with unwavering confidence: “We will return… we will return.”

She awaited the news the way mothers await their sons returning from the frontlines— with silent fear and unwavering certainty.
That night, she knew her husband’s lifelong companion had fallen. No one had announced his fate, but her heart already knew. She asked her son, asked her father, and stood at the doorstep of truth, waiting for “the mourner”—the only one with the courage to declare his departure.
On the morning of Saturday, October 19th, around 7:30 a.m., the news quietly made its way to her home: her husband had been martyred. He had fallen on Thursday, but his body had taken time to return—just like the soul lingers when the farewell is too heavy for words.
Despite the pain, she did not weep like one struck by surprise. She spoke with the calm strength of the faithful. With rare conviction, she said:
“Whoever chooses this path knows its end. Every believing woman, every woman of faith, knows that the road ends in either victory or martyrdom.”
She did not deny that loss was painful, nor that her husband was her other half. But she did not mourn him as one defeated—she blessed him, as one who had attained what he longed for. He had dedicated his life to this path, and his heart was bound to the moment of reunion. And she—with a courage echoing that of Lady Zainab (a)—never stood in his way. She supported him, encouraged his soul, and walked with him on the path of jihad until the very end.

When the enemy announced through its media that it had targeted the “regional commander,” Zahraa couldn’t deny that the news shook her. But her mind didn’t spiral into panic or collapse. Instead, another image came to her—one far beyond the battlefield, yet deeply rooted in meaning: Sayyida Zainab (A.S.) standing in Yazid’s court.
That immortal moment. That stance which turned tragedy into testimony, pain into a platform, and blood into a powerful argument.
Zahraa did not hesitate.
“From the very first moment, I remembered Sayyida Zainab (A.S.)... I drew strength, patience, and the ability to stand firm before the enemy without fear.”
Her husband’s martyrdom was a turning point. But she did not falter—because she wasn’t walking alone. She was following in Sayyida Zainab’s footsteps, the one who redefined catastrophe, who transformed grief into strength, and tears into a banner.
With steady conviction, she affirmed:
“Every Southern woman who endured, who stayed, who resisted—she is a continuation of that school. We are not accidental resisters. We are the daughters of Sayyida Zainab.”

When Zahraa returned to the South, her homecoming was unlike any other. She returned carrying two burdens: her brother, who had been martyred and buried, and her husband, whose fate remained unknown.
She first went to a quiet village, where her brother now rested. She stood silently at his grave, holding within her all that words could never say. Then she continued to Aita al-Shaab—her land, and the home of her deepest pain.
She wasted no time. She did not let sorrow slow her down. She went straight to the site where Nasser had been martyred. She wasn’t searching for proof—she was searching for remnants of a heart that had been torn from her.
She wanted to find his body, to lay eyes on him one last time, to say what only a true lover could: “I’m here. I wasn’t late.”
She was the first woman to go out in search of her martyred husband’s remains.
On the first day, she returned with nothing. But she went back again the next day, with a spirit that knew no retreat. Despite her father’s objections, despite the danger, it seemed destined—written in her name—that she would be the one to find Nasser, and that the final encounter would be through her hands.
And in one single moment, among the rubble, she saw his black shoe—the one that had always accompanied him on the battlefield. She picked it up, held it as if it were his very heart. Then, as she lowered her gaze, she saw his feet.
In a low, steady voice filled with certainty, she said: “The martyr is here.”
She stood up and walked away calmly. She didn’t scream. She didn’t collapse.
Her face was soaked in grief, but lit with faith, as she said:
“The last image I recall of Nasser... a body without a head, and a crushed chest.”
Yet she did not retreat.
She faced that moment as she had faced everything before it—with a strength that mirrored Sayyida Zainab (A.S.) as she stood before the severed head of Imam Hussein (A.S.), refusing to let the final blow be a defeat.

In the end, Zahraa did not speak merely as the widow of a martyr, but as a daughter of an entire school of thought. She spoke with unwavering confidence, and a heart overflowing with certainty:
“This path will not stop. We will continue, with everything we have. And everything we give is in the eyes of God, and for His sake.”
She didn’t just state her belief—she rooted it deeply in the soil of Karbala:
*“Our school is Karbala. And the foundation of womanhood in our path is Sayyida Zainab (A.S.), who in the heart of tragedy said: ‘I saw nothing but beauty.’”
She affirmed that the resisting woman, despite loss and pain, sees only beauty—because she sees beyond martyrdom, beyond blood. She believes that in every tear, there is testimony, and in every wound, there is victory.
And when voices began to question, “Where is the victory?”
Zahraa answered with the clarity of the faithful:
“We achieved victory when we lifted the remains of our martyrs from the ground and buried them with dignity. We achieved victory when we returned to our land with heads held high.”
She concluded with words that don’t just end a story, but awaken those who were blind to its truth:
“Victory is clear, radiant—like the midday sun... but only those with faith, conviction, and insight can see it.”
